Man Walking Outside
Everybody’s doing more walking this year. For a while, it was about the only outdoor exercise you could get. If you’ve walked in your neighborhood once or twice a day since last spring, you’re probably tired of the same trees, the same dogs, and the same landmarks.

Vary Your Walking Routine

Here are a few ideas to make your walking practice a little more interesting.

  • Pick a “park of the day.” Drive to a different park each day of the week and get in your steps with varied surroundings. Or use an unfamiliar neighborhood in lieu of a park.

  • Take a “progressive walk.” Drive to a location, walk five to 20 minutes there, then pick another walking spot. Make as few or as many stops as you like.

  • Trade walks with friends. Go to their house and do their routine walk while they come to your neighborhood and do yours.

  • Share walks with friends. This works with any of the three ideas mentioned above. Just be sure to maintain your social distancing!

  • Do some intervals. This one’s for those who want to inject a more vigorous workout into their regular strolls. Walk at a normal pace for five minutes, speed walk for the next five then slow to an amble for the five after that.

  • Keep a walking journal. Record time of day, what route you followed, how long it took. Take note of the weather and the wind speed and direction. Write down how you felt and whether you noticed anything out of the ordinary.

  • Take a few pictures. Pick something new each day or take the same shot – a tree, the western sky – and observe how it changes over time. It makes a nice companion to your walking journal.

If it’s time to start walking home to a new residence, take a good look at Kruseway Commons, our Lake Oswego apartments that boast one of the finest landscapes in the suburbs of metropolitan Portland. There are shopping and restaurants close enough to add variety to your walks. Enjoy the clubhouse, fitness center, hot tub, sauna, pool and spa, and the vaulted ceilings and fireplaces in the units.
